QUESTION
How hard is it to have a profitable stand-alone e-commerce business?
Is it hard to have a web-based retail business without having an actual store and make a profit? Can you direct us to resources for information on development of a business. I currently have a storefront, but am considering doing strictly internet retail sales.

It’s harder than most people think. First of all, to become a successful internet merchant you must learn a whole new set of skills. Web-site design, SEO, conversion, pay-perclick … the list goes on and on. This takes time, money and most importantly, patience. It is much, much easier to open a brick-and-mortar store and stock it than it is to design a site, drive traffic to it and then convert the traffic into sales. I’m certainly not saying it can’t be done. Millions of people make a living selling items online. But unless you are willing to spend the time, money and energy to learn a whole new way of business, you are much better off spending your time and treasure doing more with the store you already have up and running.
